Secrets explores the dark and difficult-to-discuss issues in Singapore, like child sex abuse and suicide. In this episode of Secrets, the topic of suicide is explored through the eyes of two survivors. Last year, 409 people killed themselves in Singapore. We explore what causes suicide ideation, what the triggers and warning signs are and understand what can be done to help those struggling with it. Nicole, 34, was diagnosed with depression and anxiety when she was 24. She has had multiple suicide attempts and continues to battle her mental illness till today. Even though she is open to talking about her mental illness, her parents are still unaware that she tried to kill herself. She wants to share her story to debunk stereotypes and stigma surrounding mental illness, and help others going through it feel less alone. “Jenny”, 18, has also suffered from suicide ideation. She was sexually abused as a child and subsequently diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. She believes strongly in talking and communication, seeing as the lack of it within her family was the catalyst which drove her to her breaking point in the first place. Secrets- Too young to die airs Friday 4th November @ 9:30pm on Channel 5, in On The Red Dot.
