In 928 A.D., a power struggle within the Imperial Palace emerges. The Emperor (Chow Yun-Fat) has ordered the imperial doctor to secretly poison the Queen (Gong Li) with a drug that will slowly drive her insane. Meanwhile the Queen is having an affair with her stepson, Crown Prince Wan (Liu Ye), unaware that he and the daughter of the imperial doctor are lovers. The most compliant of her sons, Prince Jai (Jay Chou), grows worried as his mother’s health deteriorates, while the youngest Prince Yu struggles to keep the peace.
