In 1924, Eunos Abdullah was appointed the first Malay legislative councillor. It was a blow to the traditional Malay leadership to both the Jawi Peranakans and the Arabs. Eunos Abdullah represented a shift towards a new English-educated intelligentsia, whose focus was on new and pressing issues of the Malay community. When Eunos Abdullah made his first public appearance as councillor, he spoke about the colonial government’s education policy, and how it disadvantaged the Malay youth. This would remain a key issue for Eunos, who challenged the British colonial perception of Malays as better being left to a more congenial existence of fishing and farming.
