Portuguese explorer and cosmographer Manuel Godinho de Eredia came to Southeast Asia seeking the City of Gold. While he didn’t find his El Dorado, he found Singapore. He drew a map of Singapore in 1604, which was created as part of the plan to secure the region for the Portuguese, and possibly building a fortress in Singapore. His accounts also retold Singapore’s early history, where he offers a different version of Parameswara, stating that he was ousted by Pahang rather than Ayutthaya or Majapahit.
