During the Korean War, Turkey sent a large number of troops to aid South Korea under the United Nations command called the Turkish Brigade. Shortly after the war, some Turks remained as UN peacekeepers and began teaching Koreans about Islam. The present Muslim community is centered around Itaewon in Seoul, where the first mosque was built in 1976. While paying homage to these earlier Muslim settlers in Ramadan, let’s see how the present Korean Muslims here observe the holiest month of the Islamic calendar.
