Nan Chiau High School, founded by businessman Tan Kah Kee in 1947 initially as a girls’ school, is the only secondary school affiliated to Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan. In 1978, Special Assistance Plan (SAP) schools were introduced, but the then Nan Chiau Girl’s High School was not selected. Despite changing the medium of instruction from Chinese to English and accepting male students, the school continued to face declining enrolment rates. In a bid to start afresh, Hokkien Huay Kuan decided to relocate the school from Kim Yam Road to Sengkang New Town in 2000. After several years of hard work, the results of her students as well as the portfolio of the school greatly improved. As such, in 2012, Nan Chiau High School became the 11th SAP school, regaining its former glory.
