Chung Hwa Girls’ High School, the first public Chinese-medium girls’ school in Singapore, was founded by the Chinese community in 1911 in response to Dr Sun Yat Sen's call to provide education for girls. Committed fund raising efforts by generations of teachers and students brought about glorious days for the school in 1960s and 1970s. A wave of changes came in the 1980s: becoming a full-fledged government school; adopting English as the main teaching medium and the enrollment of male students. The school also renamed to Zhonghua Secondary School after relocating to Serangoon housing estate from Bartley Road. It was granted autonomous status and offered art elective programme in recent years. The century old school had transformed to keep up with the times.
