Secrets explores the dark and difficult-to-discuss issues in Singapore, like child sex abuse and suicide. Keeping the problems hush-hush often makes things worse for the victims. The fourth episode of Secrets looks at spousal abuse. For over 5 years, Jane (not her real name) suffered abuse from her husband in silence. The abuse began 2 years into their marriage with verbal insults that progressed to punching and kicking. She was advised to apply for a personal protection order. Today, she receives help from PAVE, the centre for promoting alternatives to violence, and is planning to begin divorce proceedings. A second story features a Vietnamese Permanent Resident who also endured abuse from her husband in secret for 8 years. These women are not alone – 2, 180 applications were made by women for protection against family members in 2015.
