Historically, ‘hawkers’ were peddlers who sold food from moving carts all over Singapore. The individual hawkers were consolidated into hawker centres in the 1960s and 70s. But some shops that sell pastries, cakes or bread are standing strong, and are still widely frequented by locals. We will feature traditional pastry and cake shops and their food such as Tau Sar Piah, moon cake, bread buns that have a firm place in our long list of traditional food.
